The international transport of sensitive industrial equipment with extraordinary dimensions requires far more than standard logistics solutions. For this project, NOSTA managed the complete door-to-door transport of a coating system from Germany to Chile, with final delivery to the Very Large Telescope site.
The Challenge
With a transport width of 6.18 metres, the project required detailed route surveys, extensive permitting procedures and targeted infrastructure preparations. At the same time, an international, multimodal transport chain had to be managed in a way that ensured schedule reliability and the integrity of the equipment at all times.
Planning and Preparation
In Germany, NOSTA conducted a comprehensive road survey, defined a suitable transport route, coordinated all necessary permits and prepared the transport corridor accordingly – including temporary no-parking zones along the route. In parallel to the break-bulk shipment, several container transports were integrated into the project. Transport plans for break-bulk and container cargo were precisely aligned in terms of timing and logistics to ensure a smooth end-to-end process.
Execution of the Transport Chain
The pre-carriage was carried out to an inland port, where the coating system was loaded directly onto an inland vessel. Via Antwerp, the shipment was transported to Chile. The accompanying containers followed the same routing on a regular container vessel and were fully integrated into the overall transport concept. After transshipment at the port of Puerto Angamos, NOSTA managed the onward transport to the construction site as well as interim storage until installation.
Quality Assurance and Transparency
Independent surveyors accompanied the project at key interfaces in Europe and Chile, ensuring comprehensive documentation of all relevant transport and handling stages.
Due to the time difference between Europe and Chile, coordination with all project stakeholders often continued into the late evening hours. This ensured continuous communication and fast decision-making throughout the entire project duration.
Result
The coating system was delivered safely, on schedule and in an installation-ready condition. The project highlights NOSTA’s expertise in international project logistics for demanding industrial and high-tech transports.
